One of the greatest benefits to teaching or studying the Bible as a survey or summary is that this method provides an overview of each book which enables a person to grasp the overall purpose of the book.

For example, while Philippians is often considered an upbeat and positive book, there is a specific reason it is viewed in this fashion.  It is due to the fact that more than any other book, it gives insight into the mind of Christ.

In chapter one, we are encouraged to be single-minded in relation to the Gospel.  Chapter two stresses that we be submissive-minded by following the examples of the Lord, Paul, Titus, and others.  In chapter three, the emphasis is placed upon being spiritual-minded when considering our past, present, and future.  In the final chapter, the focus is on being secure-minded in God’s presence, His peace, His power, and His abundant provisions.

Therefore, the entire book of Philippians is meant to be a glimpse into the very mind of Christ which is key to enjoying whatever may come our way.
