One of the biggest problems faced by most Christians when attempting to study the Bible is a tendency to become overwhelmed by chapters and verses that seem either unrelated to their lives or difficult to understand.  The problem is that they are approaching Bible study as a duty or chore while trying to get a grasp by looking for Bible truth with a microscope.

What is the solution?  They first need to see the big picture.  The lessons in A Survey of the Old Testament provide a bird’s-eye view of each book of the Old Testament which allows a person to see the direction and intent of each book all condensed into a single Bible study.

Who wants to read the book of Leviticus?  While it is one of the least favorite books of the Bible, it can better be digested when given the big picture of why God included so many detailed instructions.  What is its main theme?  Separation!  The Bible reveals the PURPOSE of separation (fellowship), the PATH of separation (holiness), the PLAN of separation (atonement), and the PRODUCT of separation (redemption).

By  being able to realize God’s theme in this book as being separation, a person can better understand the detailed topics such as the significance of the animal sacrifices (which created fellowship), the priesthood (which displayed God’s desire for holiness), the scapegoat (which portrays Christ’s work on Calvary), and the holy days such as the Sabbath and Passover (which act as divine sticky notes) given as reminders of God’s plans for His people.

Once a person can see the big picture of a difficult book such as Leviticus, the details automatically become more enjoyable to study while giving a greater appreciation for the Word of God and those who gave their lives to help us to have a Bible.
